uMhwabane Shelter
uMhwabane Shelter is in the Amazizi Traditional Authority Area.
Interpretation by Celeste Rossouw: A large white snake is painted here with people and animals accompanying it. Local AmaZizi communities believe that a mythological snake with an antelope head, called the “uMhwabane”, lives in the river close to the shelter, and that this creature can influence rain patterns.
If the people are good and obey the customs, the snake will send soft and drenching female rain. If the people are disobedient, male rain will fall in hard torrents accompanied by hail and lightning.
