Older maps may name this route Bushman’s River Pass. It is now associated with amaHlubi Chief Langalibalele and the conflict of 1873. Five members of the colonial force, including three Natal Carbineers and two African auxiliaries, died in the clash at the pass. Their graves are marked near its head. Langalibalele’s later capture should not be confused with that clash.
Langalibalele Pass reaches the Drakensberg escarpment between the Sanqebethu and Durnford ridges. Plan for a sustained mountain ascent and descent, with suitable fitness, navigation skills and equipment for changing weather. Do not rely on an assumption that the path will be clear throughout.
