The Drakensberg is southern Africa’s highest mountain range — a long basalt escarpment that rises above the KwaZulu-Natal midlands and forms the border with Lesotho. The Zulu people call it uKhahlamba, the “barrier of spears”.
Tucked into its sandstone shelters is one of the richest collections of San rock art in the world. Its grasslands, wetlands and high-altitude plateaus shelter rare plants, eland and bearded vultures, and its peaks, passes and caves make it one of the best hiking destinations in Africa.
These guides bring together what you need to know before you go: the history and culture of the Berg, its flora and fauna, how conservation works in the park, and practical advice on hiking, camping and gear. Pick a topic below, and when you’re ready to head out, browse our directory of hikes, caves, passes and huts.
