Route description

Choose a short walk of about 1km to 5km in total along the Pholela River from Cobham. The flexible distance makes this a useful picnic outing or an introduction to Drakensberg walking for children.

The river has pools and places to pause for a picnic. Swim only when the flow and pool conditions are suitable, and supervise children closely beside the water.

Explore the Cobham area: Cobham’s landscape includes the Pholela River, grasslands and sandstone formations below the high escarpment. The reserve is used for day walks, overnight hiking and stages of the Giant’s Cup Trail. Read our Cobham Nature Reserve guide for more about the area and planning a visit.

Cobham river trail and mountain hike

The River walk was easy, as we walked alongside the Pholela River. It was tempting to jump in but the water for us was icy cold. The mountain hike was steep but doable for the novice hiker. The views are breathtaking. The camp sites at Cobham were clean and well kept.
