Pillar Cave is a natural sandstone shelter in the Mlambonja valley at Garden Castle, with a prominent rock pillar and views towards Rhino Peak. It is a popular destination for a day walk and a picnic in the cave’s shade.

The walk to Pillar Cave follows the river valley from Garden Castle. A visit to the cave is a shorter outing than continuing up Mashai Pass towards Rhino, which involves a much larger climb. Arrange any overnight cave stay with the reserve.

Explore the Garden Castle area: Garden Castle is part of the southern uKhahlamba-Drakensberg landscape, with high grasslands, rocky slopes and river valleys. A visit can be planned around the wider reserve as well as individual mountain features. Read our Garden Castle Nature Reserve guide for more about the area and planning a visit.
