The Lakes Cave approach to Amakehla Pass starts in the Cobham high country, using the ridge above the Lakes Cave and Pholela Cave valleys. It is a substantial climb beyond the cave walk.
Amakehla’s upper section has exposed traverses and short scrambles through rock bands, so it is unsuitable for hikers uncomfortable with heights. Wet rock, ice and strong wind can make the exposed sections hazardous. Minaret Pass, farther south, is a separate and more severe route.
Explore the Cobham area: Cobham’s landscape includes the Pholela River, grasslands and sandstone formations below the high escarpment. The reserve is used for day walks, overnight hiking and stages of the Giant’s Cup Trail. Read our Cobham Nature Reserve guide for more about the area and planning a visit.
