This approach to Amakehla Pass starts from Pholela Cave in the Cobham area. Reaching the upper pass involves finding the connection from the valley onto the ridge; do not expect a continuous obvious path straight upriver from the cave.
Higher up, the route winds through rock bands with exposed traverses and short scrambles. The Lakes Cave approach reaches the same pass from a different side of the lower ridge.
Explore the Cobham area: Cobham’s landscape includes the Pholela River, grasslands and sandstone formations below the high escarpment. The reserve is used for day walks, overnight hiking and stages of the Giant’s Cup Trail. Read our Cobham Nature Reserve guide for more about the area and planning a visit.
